Looking at a painting, the mind goes on two journeys: over the surface of the painting, and into the world of the painting. They might sound like opposites, but depth and flatness can coexist. In my landscape paintings, I try to create both. I begin with a carefully structured perspective drawing, then paint with thin, relatively flat colors, trying to see each shape as simply a shape.
I’m interested in rhythmic, geometric compositions, and in the interaction between the natural world and the built environment. Most of us live in places that have been completely transformed by humans. So many of the structures we see every day are designed primarily for function, despite their visual prominence in the landscape. Is there beauty in these things? Should there be?
